Back in 1954, Harry Handlery had already made his mark as a successful hotelier for almost eighty years in California. It was that year that he saw a golden opportunity to extend his family hotel business to booming Mission Valley in San Diego.
Built from the ground up, its original name was the Stardust Hotel, as it was attached to the Stardust Golf Course. Even then, this family-run hotel focused on offering guests something unique – including the flashy, synchronized swimming mermaid show at its popular Reef Lounge.
In the 1980s, the Stardust was reinvented to appeal to family vacationers, convention attendees and business travelers and hence, was given their family name – The Handlery Hotel & Country Club.
In the 1990s it adopted the name that it holds today – The Handlery Hotel & Resort – one of San
Diego's favorite family resorts.
